matt, sounds like something i just read about bob gibson. his SS said he stopped ever coming to the mound to offer advice because once he tried it and gibby said "get outta here...the only thing you know about pitching is that it's hard to hit."

now granted, with the 15-in mound and strike zones from your ankles to your eyeballs that year, yeah, ERA's are gonna be down. but still...28 complete games and during Jun and July he pitched 92 innings and gave up TWO RUNS!! my fav '68 stat tho is that of the only 6 games from which he was removed, all were for pinch-hitters---he was never replaced for another pitcher the entire season. that's some deadball era shit right there.

by the way, the traditional version of this story is that it was the catcher (mccarver) not the shortstop (javier).

this ESPN writer guy attributes it to Dal Maxvill, the shortstop for the 68 cards. but then, the writer also reported the 2-run inning streak at 99, which i think is wrong. so go figure.

Keri: Bob Gibson's legendary 1968 season

Forty years ago, Bob Gibson had one of the most dominant seasons of all time: His 1.12 ERA remains one of baseball's magic numbers.

No, no. That is what Jim Palmer said every time Earl Weaver came to the mound. I can't believe you guys think this had anything to do with Gibson and the Cardinals.

I played Selson Purple in the Great Falls Community Players' production of "Scabes: The Musicale" in the Spring of 1994.

Well, I thank you, Eric. Your words mean more to me than any critic in print. In truth, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to be, well, the weak link in a cast of true giants of the community stage at that time in that Great Falls milieu.

i have a good money-making scheme: write a stageplay entitled "The Scottish Play". open in off-off-off broadway. you'll sell out every night because people with think they're going to see MacBeth, when in fact it's a play about the history of celebrity endorsed dandruff treatment products. most audiences will walk out after five minutes, but you already have their money, so who cares.

I have a great idea for a musical. The owners of a hapless nba franchise rename the team the Browns in hopes that someone from Baltimore will take it off their hands, and rename the team after an effeminate sounding bird.
