Who are THE EIGHT?

An open thread debate here.  Who are the eight players in baseball right now, one per position (not including pitcher) who are the absolute best at their position?  By that I mean, the 29 teams that don't have that guy, would take him over what they have at that position right now.

An example - the easiest of the bunch: Albert Pujols at first base.

The Cardinals have him; all 29 other teams would take him over what they have at first, no question.

So chime in.  Pick a position and a player and make your case in the comments.

  1. I think there may be a few positions where there is no guy. But for 3B I'll nominate Evan Longoria.

ROY, a silver slugger and could have been the AL MVP in 2010. 3 Gold Gloves and young.

  2. i shall offer hanley ramirez at shortstop. power, average, range. admittedly a head case at times, but who wouldn't be playing in front of 14 people?

that pujols fellow seemed like a good choice.

  3. Dustin Pedroia at second. No need to offer support or argue 'bout it.

  4. i thought defense was supposed to be a factor.

  5. I might also suggest Nelson Cruz in right. Absolute gun; hits, hits for power, etc.. 5 years ago it would have been Ichiro; maybe not now.

  6. Pedroia? What about Robbie Cano? Chase Utley? This might be a position where there isn't one guy. But I think there are several teams that would prefer Cano over Pedroia.

  7. you know, red sox fans say things like "x. therefore x. no need to offer support."

they may have finally won a couple of rings in the last 100 years, but they seem to always lead in the competition for "most dogmatic."

but they don't like this argument: "the red sox suck. no need to offer support or argue 'bout it."

  8. seven world series championships since 1903 including a sweep of some team from St. Louie.
Pedroia is great at defense. Just cuz' some chump hates the Sox is no reason to rank on a the best second basement in the majors. By the way, I agree with Pujols at first.

  9. World Series between 'em:

    Cards 2 (46, 67)
    Red Sox 1 (whenever)

    totals?

    Cards 10
    Red Sox 7

    best player traded by Cards?
    Cy Young; Steve Carleton

best player traded by Red Sox?
    :)

you would have thought they'd be better; being
    so ruthless and all.

  10. I think Joe Mauer is the guy at Catcher, but I wish it were Matt Weiters. Mauer has two batting titles and good power. None better, right now, for sure, but in the end I don't think he'll be regarded as better than Bench or Pudge Rodriguez.

  11. agree; but a catcher like bench doesn't come along that often. mauer needs to stay healthy and, of course, he is playing a position where that is quite difficult to do.

  12. I suspect Mauer won't stay behind the plate for too many more years.
